This was such a beautifully-told story, Monica. That's a lot to have to deal with at once -- a decades-long friendship ending on top of a divorce. It's hard to face the truth when there's that part of ourselves that wants to hang on to things as they are; to convince us out of reality, especially when the reality is painful. Loved the imagery, especially "We were two streams born in the same river that started flowing in separate directions." Thanks for sharing this. Have you already published this memoir?

Thanks so much for taking the time to read it, Brina. It's true that it was tough to handle both, but a bit liberating too.

The memoir is in progress and I've published the chapters I wrote, here on my page (https://monicanastase.substack.com/s/memoir). But the more I write it, the more it seems it works better as individual essays -- like the one you just read, you didn't necessarily need to read the previous ones to get it. So, I'm also thinking of how to continue it, as a full book or as individual essays...

Yeah, I definitely see that they work well as standalone pieces, which is quite nice. I think that's great you're writing a memoir and putting your stories out into the world, whether that winds up being a whole book or separate stories.
