We lived twin lives in Melbourne and Bologna! It's interesting how Edward had the same experience with being labelled 'originally from'. Like, YES! the dust under our shoes IS from our Home Country! It's so common for people in Australia to feel a sense of belonging with their family cultural background while not speaking the language/not being born there/not having visited/...
Pretty amazing coincidence! I was pretty amazed in Aus at families who were Italian, but the kids and grandkids had never been, and some did not even know what part they were from. It was pretty cool to witness the intact Italian community in places like Carlton in Melbourne
Very much relate to that searching for perfect. Great advice there.
I really don’t like the word expat, just for its connotations of who call themselves expats. I call myself an immigrant, albeit I think most of my living abroad would be better defined as expat.
An awesome read. :) PLease interview me too :)
I'll put you on the list ;)

Thanks Sheila, agree re terminology
Weirdly I had to Google if it was more associated with the English, apparently by definition not. But it does make me think of ex colonies.
Also lived in Australia. Melbourne and the central coast. I’ve family down Limerick way, spent last Christmas there.
Wish I could’ve read this when I started travelling! It was what I needed to hear 😆
