I was nodding along to your observations (that boyfriend was a bit obnoxious, let's be honest) and you've reminded me how much I enjoyed this novel and Guo's reflections on language. It's her latest, My Battle of Hastings. I suggested it to my colleague as she's Chinese and loves Hastings so thought she may like it.
